In 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the world, Damion and Natalee Baker witnessed its devastating impact on children in Jamaica’s rural communities. The transition to virtual learning exposed glaring educational inequities. Poor internet connectivity and the high cost of cellular data made online classes nearly impossible for many children. Families living below the poverty line faced the impractical burden of sharing a single cell phone among multiple children, leaving these students at risk of being left behind.
Determined to make a difference, the Bakers launched a breakfast program in two schools, supported by the voluntary contributions of two dedicated teachers. This initiative provided essential nutrition, helping children focus and succeed in school, while reigniting hope for families struggling during uncertain times.
What began as a grassroots effort has since grown into Paths and Gateways, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Florida. Today, the organization is dedicated to uplifting and equipping children aged 8–12 in rural and underserved communities by addressing the social determinants of learning.
Our Mission
At Paths and Gateways, our mission is to uplift and equip youth ages 8–12 in rural and underserved communities by addressing the social determinants of learning. Through targeted programs and campaigns, we foster motivation, self-belief, and resilience, promote proper nutrition and hygiene, and provide essential school supplies to support educational journeys and overall well-being.
Our Impact
Operating in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, and Palm Beach County, Florida, Paths and Gateways directly impacts over 200 children annually. By addressing barriers such as lack of resources, inadequate nutrition, and limited support systems, the organization empowers children to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our programs meet basic needs while fostering resilience and self-belief, creating opportunities for brighter futures.
Research highlights the importance of addressing social determinants of learning, such as access to nutrition, hygiene, and educational resources. These factors significantly enhance academic performance, self-esteem, and social skills. Our programs empower children to embrace learning, develop resilience, and build the confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond.
By removing barriers and creating opportunities, Paths and Gateways transforms lives, proving that with compassion, commitment, and a shared vision, every child can reach their full potential—one step at a time.
